Description: This introductory workshop offers participants
who are unfamiliar with assistive technologies an opportunity to
see and experience the role that AT can play in early development
of children with disabilities. Topics addressed include: Who can
benefit, categories and kinds of AT, the issue of learned helplessness,
and the critical need to empower young children to activity participate
in early learning activities. Devices and aids are demonstrated
when discussed.

to support children with disabilities, ages 3-18, with adaptive
and assistive technology. The focus is on literacy tools, strategies,

Description: This workshop defines and explains the important
link that communication technology provides for individuals who
are non-verbal or unintelligible. Discussion includes: Potential
candidates, developmental and ecological approaches to language
development, learned helplessness, assessment strategies and tools,
and potential solutions. Presentation is followed by an informal
hands-on period of exploration, sharing of experiences, and provision
of additional support resources.

Title: Piecing It All Together: Assistive
Technology in the IEP Process

Description: This workshop focuses on strategies for meeting
the "assistive technology consideration" component of
IDEA. Included are discussions of congressional intent, a hierarchy
of assistive technologies, a model four-step process for considering
AT in a child’s IEP, what questions to consider, how to document
the use of AT in the IEP, and where to get support resources. The
workshop concludes with a guided, hands-on exploration of various
technologies appropriate for students with disabilities.
